Songwriting Challenge Week 10 (Burn It Down)

JFC I need to get off of this topic…. I feel like an 80's Reagan-era punk raging against it all.  Whatever.  I need to get this shit off my chest.

The prompt from Ryan this week was “your head on my chest”.  I'll admit, I had already started this song and decided to inject a little hope into the bridge against the semi-sarcastic  (semi LMAO) message in the song.  The first bridge I wrote for this song was jarring.  I thought I was being cute with some chords and it just… sucked.  Stripped it out, rewrote it and had to rerecord it.  Still not sure I love it but at least it no longer makes you go “what the actual…?”

While I don't really want to see this little country of ours burn down, I am waiting for the pendulum to swing in the other direction.  I thought it would happen this time around but we were all duped into believing the time was now.  There will be a correction, and it'll probably be an overcorrection.  Not everyone should get everything they want but we should be able to take care of people and the earth, and move away from this Christian Nationalism bullshit.  I have to believe it'll come, I just hope it comes sooner rather than later.

Instruments on this one were Yurt Rock drums, and the Hummingbird, the Tim Armstrong 12 String Hellcat, the Guild, and the Jägernäut bass. I wanted to throw some organ on this but I ran out of time because… bridge.

Forgive the out of tune caterwauling, especially on the background vocals.  I wish I was a better singer, but I'll rectify that by having my lovely wife sing the hell out of these songs when I revisit them in the future.

Lyrics

like a forest fire clears the underbrush
like sometimes you need a double flush
sometimes the quickest way to a clean slate
is to run the asylum with an inmate

may take a while, or longer yet
to heal the damage, to hit reset
fire heats the ground, the soil is warmed
That'll bring the growth that we need to transform

burn it down
ashes on the ground
burn it down
life will rebound

Old testament fire purifies
destroy it so the new can arise
raging fire stimulates rebirth
so we can build from the scorched earth

short sighted grifters, science denied
the system is rigged to make you comply
The American Dream has up and died
but not everyone greives at the graveside

burn it down
ashes on the ground
burn it down
life will rebound

and while it all burns
lay your head upon my chest
allay your concerns
exhale your distress

burn it down
ashes on the ground
burn it down
life will rebound

burn it down
ashes on the ground
burn it down
life will rebound
