Songwriting Challenge Week 6 (Choice)

We got our prompt from a wonderful songwriter, Karen Barr, this week.  It was "What do you want".

The first words I wrote were “what the fuck am I going to do with that?” LOL. It was a tough one, and I can't say I love the song but that's absolutely going to happen when you're trying to write a song a week.  I'm loving this challenge and to get a prompt like this really put a boot up my ass.  Doesn't matter if I'm not in love with what I wrote, it's flexing that skill that matters.

I do kind of like the chorus on this one.  Not sure why the “be better, do better” line stuck with me but when I go to rework this song that's likely staying.

Because I wasn't thrilled with the music I wrote I fell back on an old habit of just layering shit in.  So instruments on this track, on top of the Yurt Rock drum track, were;

Gretsch guitar, Schecter 8 String Bass, Fender P Bass, and the Vox organ.  Normally the 8 String Bass is in standard tuning, with the paired string tuned an octave higher.  This time I tuned it to E(b), A(e), D(a), G(d) - fifths above the root.  It's not terribly noticable because I kind of buried it a bit in the mix but it does give a different sound to that bass and I kind of dig it.  And then I added more bass via the P Bass.

Lyrics

in a perfect world

we'd get what we deserve

and what would you ask for

just enough and nothing more?

or would you cave to human nature

the requests would be a bit more major

nothing exceeds like excess

and doing the work is a lot less fun than recess

the choice is yours

even in this imperfect world

be better, do better

give an extra measure

fancy cars

expensive cigars

gold plated toilets

and overflowing wallets

or would you lean towards

universal rewards

clean up the earth

spread joyfulness and mirth

what do you want

what do you need

what will you take

what will you cede

what do you want

what do you need

what will you cede

to those in need

in a perfect world

we'd get what we deserve

and what would you ask for

just enough and nothing more?

or would you cave to human nature

the requests would be a bit more major

nothing exceeds like excess

the choice is yours

even in this imperfect world

be better, do better

give an extra measure

the choice is yours

even in this imperfect world

be better, do better

give an extra measure
