Thanksgiving Week had no songwriting prompt so you get a throwback song: Never (Meant To Be)

One of the first songs I wrote that I was really proud of.  An old Smoke Up jOhnny track (both Apple Music and Spotify links provided for your aural pleasure) that was written about a former relationship.  They say write what you know, and at this time this is what I knew.  It was a challenging relationship that I really wanted to work but it was, well, never meant to be.  Timing was bad, circumstances were off, whatever…

I was still pretty shit at writing music at this point (still not great at it, but better… LOL) and this song came from a practice jam.  I had a habit of recording practices  and anything we didn't have lyrics for I'd write.  Nearly all of my songs up until the end of Snapface were written this way.

Looking at it these days… I still love the song but… no rhymes in places, rhyming why with why, stuff that is verboten but rules are made to be broken.  The song still works for me.

Lead Guitar, Robert Vincent, had the guitar hook.  Tom Ferry on background vocals and rhythm guitar.  Scotty Harris on drums.  Bass and lead vocals are yours truly.

Lyrics

I don't really know why
I don't like the color of the daylight
and I don't really know why
I don't like to see you with that guy

and I don't really know him
but you should be here next to me
and I don't want to think why
I ever let you get away

In my mind
I see us together
but in my world
it was never meant to be

and I can't figure out why
the rain falls out of the sky on me
every time I miss you
things get dark I feel the gray close in

and I can't figure out why
you and I were never us
and I don't want to think why
you never took the chance on us

In my mind
I see us together
but in my world
it was never meant to be

<solo>

In my mind
I see us together
but in my world
it was never meant to be

In my mind
I see us together
but in my world
it was never meant to be

it was never meant to be
